They were hot hot hot

26 Jun

In sports, new always seems to be better. Rookies provide intrigue, but the next year, when they are sophomores, they are not so cool. New stadiums and coaches are pretty cool too. Until that stadium reaches its second year, and until that coach proves to be not too hot after all. So in the NBA Draft, there is bound to be excitement over these brand new players. But really, how much of an impact will these players have in their first year? There is always the exception, but for most, the answer is little. They may be a building block for years to come, but they will not make an impact for a little while. People make picks and envision themselves winning a championship, when in reality, we already know the contenders for next year. And those teams making those high draft picks are most likely not one of them. And what percentage of teams are made up of mostly players they drafted? Very few. Sorry, but that is how it is. Wait a couple years, and maybe you can be a contender. So to GMs, coaches, fans, etc.: enjoy your shiny new toy of a rookie until next year, when they seem not so shiny and when another group of hot players come in. And maybe, just maybe you can squeeze some winning in between.

PS: Wiz won’t be as good as people think next year. I’m a little worried about the Nets. Orlando will be beast if they can keep it together. Too many trades last night. Unfortunate times for those undrafted, whether they were seniors or underclassmen. 2009-2010 beware list: Lakers, Spurs, Nuggets, Rockets, Blazers, Magic, Cavaliers, Celtics, Wizards, Hawks, Mavs. Hottest teams of the hour: Magic, Cavs, Spurs.

PPS: Baseball, you can get your glory back today. Sorry you got shoved under the radar yesterday.

Shocking news, plus less important matters

There are a lot of things that I would like to address in this post, so I am not going to go into great detail. First, I would like to say RIP Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. Two amazing stars with great influence lost on the same day.

In the meantime, The Nets completed a trade of Vince Carter. For the second year in a row I am left confused as to why the Nets have traded away a star player. Last year it was Richard Jefferson, and now Carter. The Nets got Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Tony Battie. Not good. Lee has potential, but Alston is iffy and Battie does not do much in my opinion. They better sign LeBron or get some help after pulling off this one.

Drafts like the wind, or drafts like a rough draft? I’ll take both, which sums up the NBA Draft

headerI could sit here and talk about the NBA Draft, but I’ll leave that to the experts, such as ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb, who predicted Georgetown’s “Darrell” Summers to go 30th in the first round. Last time I checked he went by DaJuan, but then again, who really knows. I just hope the Nets pick someone that can have a Brook Lopezenesque like impact. And for those who say the draft is weak, I agree and disagree. The high school class of ’08 was a weak one, and I can say that because I went to school with them for 3 years, and just because the classes of ’06, 07, and especially ’09 are much better. But no worries because the class of ’10 wasn’t too hot in my high school. On the other hand, this draft may just have some late bloomers. There are good players that can be found anywhere, and I think some of the guards can be good. Not too sure about Blake Griffin. I don’t see him as a star, and I think Ricky Rubio is a huge risk. However, they are projected to be drafted high for a reason, so we should see. It will be an interesting and fun night tonight!

You wanna take the Subway or Metro?

I have been watching a set of games these past few days- Mets vs Orioles and Nationals vs Yankees, and observed a few interesting things. The Mets were down in MD and the Nats up in NY. First, I realized that the people in New York are watching exactly what the people in MD are watching. Second, Camden Yards is currently more full than Yankee Stadium. Third, Nats RF Austin Kearns caught a foul ball and I see him giving it to the crowd. It looked like he placed it on the sill of the stadium just to sit there and have a fan grab it. But then I saw the hidden kid that he gave it to. How nice. Also, if the Nats win tonight, then they will have taken 2 out of 3 from the Yankees. Meanwhile, if the Mets hold on, then they will take their series from the O’s. Next, I’m getting a little sick of MASN, the Nats and O’s channel. I would rather be watching YES or SNY. But here is my favorite observation: on MASN, they’ll say, “You know, [insert bad Nats player] is really reminding me of [insert hall of famer].”

Switcheroo Gone Bad

You know when you are taking a test, and you think you know the right answer but aren’t really sure? So you go with your gut, and then change. Or at least that is what I seem to do. And then when you find out you changed it to the wrong answer, and it’s one of the worst feelings? I think that’s how Marian Hossa feels right now. Last season, the Penguins and the Red Wings faced off in the Stanley Cup Finals, won by the Wings. Hossa played for the Pens. So, in the offseason, Hossa took less money from the Red Wings to join them, thus leaving the Pens. He thought he had a better chance to win a title with the Wings. Oops. He probably should have stayed, considering the Penguins beat the Red Wings in Game 7 tonight to win the title. Unfortunately for Hossa, he was on the wrong team two straight years. He’s probably wishing his mistake cost him an ‘A’ on a math test, instead of an ‘F’ in the section “Championship.”

Magazines, Magic, Mets, mehh

I got my beloved Sports Illustrated in the mail today. The cover was not really a cover. Instead, it could be pulled out and there one would see the ad on the inside of it. SI must really be crunching right now. Sad, sad times in the economy. I also bought ESPN today. They need to stop putting soccer players on their cover. I almost didn’t buy the mag after seeing the cover. However, I bought it, and it was really enjoyable to read.

The Magic are going to have to be perfect on offense AND defense if they want a shot at evening the series tonight. Kobe had his off game, and I wouldn’t expect anymore.

I’m a little baseball’ed out right now. Too much. It would be better if the Mets were playing like they did in 2006. But they’re not, and it’s almost June.

That’s all for today, because I’m sick (but not like Karen in Mean Girls).

Fresh Look

8 Jun

Hey guys,

The old look was getting a little old, even though it was called “freshy.” I have a new more interesting look now. Unfortunately the basketballs are missing, but it’s really the posts that matter. I’m not big into change, and I have to admit I accidently changed the look, but I think it’s pretty cool. Enjoy and comment!

Pretty pathetic when you’re cheering for one run that cut the lead to six

The Mets have been quite interesting lately. They are missing Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado, two players that basically keep their offense running. Carlos Beltran and David Wright can only do so much. J.J. Putz is gone for a while, not that he had been doing too hot as of late because of injuries. The Mets’ medical staff has been getting complaints, but I think the Mets know what they are doing. The team will simply have to let the injuries ride out. Come August, you’ll see the Mets with an offense consisting of Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Delgado. You’ll see a bullpen of Johan Santana, K-Rod, and maybe a healthy Putz and Billy Wagner. That is a tough team to beat. But for now, the Mets will get the occasional 7-1 whooping on behalf of the Nationals. At Saturday night’s game, the Mets scored a run in the eighth inning to make the game 7-1. All of the Mets fans in the park, myself included  (I think there were more Mets fans than Nats fans regardless of what people say) stood up and started chanting “Let’s Go Mets! Let’s Go Mets!” Then leave it to a Nats fan to yell back, “You guys got one run! Yay!” That’s okay though because we got 7 yesterday in a 7-0 win. All hail the Mets, who, for much of the summer, are all many of us fans have.
