From the east to the atlantic coast? Sounds the same. But it doesn’t act the same.

Okay, what’s going on here. Football teams that are supposed to be losing are winning and vice versa. Syracuse is moving to the ACC. Oh, where to start…. How about Indy, where if I was a Colts fan I’d be very, very worried. Kerry Collins is in no way, shape or form any reincarnation of Peyton Manning. I wish the Colts the best of luck on the season. Boy do they need it. A new QB probably wouldn’t hurt either. In other news, the Redskins are 2-0. Means nothing. Neither does 3-0. Get to 4-0, then we’re talking.

And now, to the biggest news of the day—Syracuse and Pitt to the ACC. Okay, let’s put Pitt aside for a second. Because no one cares about them. They’re clearly second-fiddle in these discussions. Why? Because by leaving the Big East, Syracuse, a founding member, is essentially allowing the conference to sink into a pile of nothingness. First off, we don’t know how long this process will take. Could be a couple years. But let’s look at both angles here. First, the easy part. The cons. And of course, with both of these conferences being basketball heavy (although probably not wanting to admit it), bball comes to my mind first. So Syracuse can say bye to conference games against Georgetown. Bye to the Garden and Big East tournament. Bye to a founding legacy!! Okay, enough drama. They’ll get over it all, and the ACC will probably weasel its way into the Garden somehow. Do I feel bad for the Big East? Sure. But not that bad. It was kind of annoying with half the schools being bball and half football. And Notre Dame just for bball. So now we get to the pros. SU can play UNC and Duke. And Maryland (for my sake). Football (which is most likely at the core of all of this transfer despite these being bball schools) won’t be an improvement as ‘Cuse will be leaving the worst big football conference for the second worst. But, the ACC is now very stable (although the Big East was before ‘Cuse and Pitt decided to leave). Regardless, there are mixed feelings here, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s still thinking about this move. Thoughts??

A state of error

29 Sep

This is the state of my teams:

Another season on the outs for the Mets. It seems like another team is making the playoffs every second. But not the Mets.

The Nets aren’t getting Carmelo (surprise, surprise!) and now Devin Harris is unhappy about the whole thing. I thought you couldn’t get worse than 12 wins…

The Giants, meanwhile, are 1-2 and have a ton of issues to sort out. And they’ve been receiving press shedding them in a not-so-hot light.

SU Women’s Volleyball team lost the first game of the season against an inferior opponent.

Oh boy, there’s a lot of fixin’ to do. Why can’t I like the Yankees/Phillies, Heat/Lakers, Saints/Colts, and Alabama football? I guess if you win all the time it’s not that fun either…though I’d take it!

Man are they good

NYDN.

Manning. Peyton Manning, right? The last name “Manning” is synonymous with football. First came Archie Manning and now Peyton and Eli. Peyton is arguably the best quarterback in the league now and one of the greatest players ever. No one remembers that Tom Brady used to rule the quarterbacks. Manning is the head honcho now. So where does that leave Eli, who will face Peyton this Sunday when the Giants play the Colts?  Well, Eli certainly doesn’t have the stats or longevity of Peyton. But he does have the same amount of championships. Still, Eli is not considered among the quarterback elite. He probably never will.

When he first came into the league, I was skeptical. Yeah, he had the name, but did he have the game? Not at first. It  took some time. But now, he’s a quality QB. I think he’s better than the rep he gets. Ever since the Super Bowl, I don’t doubt him. I am fully confident in his ability to lead the team.

Can the G-Men top Peyton’s Colts? Hmm…I think so. We’ll who wins Sunday. In the game and in the battle of the Mannings.

A saint or a colt? I’ll ride the colt

I said this last year in my Super Bowl preview, and I’ll say it again. It is too hard to pick a definite winner in today’s Super Bowl. Either team could win, and either team could just as easily lose. The Colts have the better record and Peyton Manning, but Drew Brees isn’t too shabby himself. My gut is to go with the Colts, but I would not be surprised if the Saints won.

The Super Bowl is about the only event (besides Obama’s election) that brings the whole country together. Even if people don’t like the game itself, they watch for the commercials or the food at the parties. If you don’t watch the Super Bowl, what are you doing? The Super Bowl isn’t just a sports game, it’s the entertainment event of the year.

The Final Four

20 Jan

It pays to rest up

17 Jan

Going into this weekend, all four of the playoff matchups had a similar vibe. There was the lower, hotter seed, versus the sagging, higher seed. The Cardinals were coming off of a wild win over the Packers, while the Saints had lost three straight but were still the number one seed. The Ravens had thrashed the Patriots and the number one Colts had lost two straight. But yesterday, the better teams throttled the hot teams, with the Colts and Saints getting back on the winning track in annoyingly lopsided games.

Now today, the slumping Vikings are currently leading the red hot Cowboys 17-3. More of the same? We will have to see. But if the Vikings win, and the Chargers continue the trend against the Jets tonight, then this will be the first time in a while that the top teams actually come out on top.

Tick-tock back and forth. Clocks are made of Steel, not feathers!

Some thoughts on last night’s game: Both teams had valid chances to win the game. The Steelers just happened to take advantage of their last one. The commercials were down. I was expecting more. Bruce Springsteen was pretty good, especially with his oldies. Read the first few paragraphs of the game article on the front page of the Post. That sums up the game quite well. Now, on to next season. Can never start too early! The Giants better rebound, but I’m not sure. The Cardinals could be really good, or mediocre. The Steelers will probably always be good with Big Ben and their D. Some other teams to watch: The Pats (but with Tom Brady this time). We will see if he returns healthy and gets back to his true form. If he does, then the Patriots will be good. Dangerously good. (But not 19-0). Peyton Manning’s teams are always consistently good. Also, the NFC East could very well be a four team race. The Skins will want to erase this year’s memories, and the Eagles and Cowboys will be very hungry. Grrr. Okay, I’ve had enough football for one week. Tonight in men’s college hoops, Louisville plays host to UCONN. UCONN is pretty beast, but Louisville is undefeated in Big East play and playing at home. Tough pick. I’ll go against the home team. In this week’s Sports Illustrated, will we see the ten millionth Steelers cover in the last month. Gosh, I am getting drowned in gold and black. The Giants had a run of three consecutive covers last year, but blue and red is alright. Or maybe it was the Giants that were alright. I actually enjoyed the dull brown cover of last week’s issue. But it would have been better if Jason Kidd was on the front instead of LeBron. Speaking of the all-star game (wait, I don’t think I was, but who really cares). Amare Stoudemire, Tim Duncan, AI? Come on. It’s wayyyy past their time. Let the youngins’ start the game.
